Assistant manager stole takings from employers
A MONTH after lying to obtain a job as an assistant shop manager, a Wallasey man began stealing from the takings. The thefts came to light when the manager of Supernews, in Liscard, checked the books on February 3, the day after she had left Paul Godfrey in charge.
Steven Ball, prosecuting, said Godfrey, of Bell Road, had claimed he had no previous convictions when he was taken on.
The manager found discrepancies in two bank paying in slips amounting to £1,000. When confronted, Godfrey said he was not good with figures but it was also found he had not filled in the denominations of the banked cash.
He was verbally disciplined but shortly afterwards the head office called police and it also came to light that another £500 had gone missing and the paying-in slip had been altered.
Godfrey claimed they had been genuine mistakes. He was due to face trial last month but then pleaded guilty to both theft offences.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that Godfrey had previous convictions, including dishonesty.
Jailing him for nine months the judge, Recorder Sarah Singleton, said: "This was a job which you had tricked your way into by lying about your previous convictions.
"As soon as you managed to get your hands on your employer's money, you seemed unable to stop yourself taking it."
