All fired up

LISCARD councillors have given the seal of approval to an innovative healthy living scheme at Wallasey Fire Station.

"All Fired Up" is a 12-week programme which aims to improve the health and lifestyle of young people in Wallasey by giving them access to a personal trainer, gym facilities, dieticians and healthy living classes.

Thirteen young people are currently taking part in the programme, which is being run with the support of station manager Ken Ross, Birkenhead and Wallasey PCT and fitness trainer Paul Roberto.

Local councillors Dave Hawkins, Gary Leech and Adrian Jones, along with Merseyside Fire Authority members Cllr Don Prout and Cllr Peter Johnson, visited the station last week to see the scheme for themselves.

Cllr Hawkins, who organised the visit, said: "I hope this can be used as a model for other communities, combining local facilities such as the fire station with skilled health care and trainers."

The programme is the first of its kind in the country.
