Quest to find lost memorial
A LOCAL historian is appealing to News readers for help to find the whereabouts of a missing war memorial.Military historian Steve McGreal is looking for a plaque which is thought to have gone missing from the wall of the former Lloyds Bank on the corner of Silverlea Avenue and Seaview Road in Liscard around 30 years ago.
And he is also hoping to find out about the tragedy thought to be behind its conception.
Steve said: "A casual remark about the plaque brought it to my interest, particularly because of the legend it's reputed to bear."
It's thought the plaque said something along the lines of: 'On one day during the Great War every family in this road suffered a casualty in battle.'
"I've visited several residents in the road and nobody is aware of the plaque, but most of them have only lived there a few years."
Several other local people are aware of the existence of the plaque so I don't think it's an urban myth.
George Donnison, Merseyside coordinator for the National Inventory of War Memorials, has also heard of the missing plaque.
He said: "Unfortunately, while you need planning permission before cutting down a tree, war memorials be they grand or modest like the Silverlea one, are not protected in any way."
"The demolition of churches and redundant factories all too frequently result in the loss of more memorial tablets."
Steve added: "I've contacted local museums and reference libraries over the fate of the plaque but it's all been in vain so far.
"Should the memorial be languishing in someone's garage or shed, a safe home is offered where it could be on public display and a modern version commemorating the tale could be hung at Silverlea Ave.
"Hopefully someone can give some insight into the plaque." Do you have any information about the missing plaque? Call Steve on 606 1177 or email him at bantamsguy@fsmail.net
